Good science not only allows us to explain and understand the world around us, but, in its most exemplary form, it also plays a key role in shaping the future. In this regard, science has always been a forward-looking endeavor. Amid the multifaceted discussions about what the future holds and what we hope for it to be, various branches of science contribute their voices to the conversation.

This is particularly evident in our program for the summer semester of 2025, which centers around the future of democracy. Through the "Militant Democracy" project, we will explore its defense and enhancement. Kicking off the series will be political scientist Petra Dobner, followed by Maximilian Steinbeis, Volker Weiß, and Steffen Mau. The culmination of the program will feature a panel discussion with Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann on July 3, 2025 (pages 6-9).

Yet, it is not only the weighty matters of politics that should draw you to the events at IZKT. Science, too, can be a source of play and imagination. On June 4 and 5, the Next Frontiers festival will invite you on a captivating journey to explore the intersection of science fiction and scientific innovation. It is an event where those shaping the future gather to share their visions (pages 10-13).

At the IZKT, we are committed not only to science communication but also to reflecting on this complex endeavor and fostering connections with colleagues. On July 15, we will host the fourth meeting of the SciComm Stuttgart network, an initiative we’ve launched in collaboration with the City of Stuttgart (pages 14-15).

The IZKT team hopes you enjoy reading and looks forward to welcoming you in person!
