The response to Steffen Mau's book Ungleich vereint. Warum der Osten anders bleibt (Unequally United: Why the East Remains Different), published in June 2024, was overwhelming. This response was not limited to Eastern Germany, but also extended beyond, as evidenced by his winning the 2024 Bavarian Nonfiction Book Prize. With historical depth and great empathy, Mau not only describes the enduring differences but also offers suggestions on how the East could be transformed into a "laboratory of participation." A year later, we are inviting the author for a conversation on the state of democracy in both East and West. Have his insights held true? How should the latest developments be understood?
Steffen Mau is a German sociologist and professor of macrosociology at the Institute of Social Sciences at Humboldt University in Berlin. Since 2021, he has also been a member of the Advisory Board for Integration and Migration.
