Science and Democracy seem to operate interdependently, but very differently. While democracy is about equality, science is about quality. In recent years this tension between allowing a maximum of participation on the one hand and seeking the truth on the other hand seems to be escalating. In the Brexit campaign and during the corona pandemic experts seem to have been under attack and even when it comes to climate change the same can be observed. Post-truth populism rejects science and undermines democracy. What is the role of science communication in this conflict? How do we give science an adequate role in democratic decision-making - and how should science communication therefore be conducted? Our short course will discuss these questions in different formats and present various successful examples.

Short Course for students of the University of Stuttgart.
