"One of the central questions that haunted me was how the fragile young democracy of Weinar could, in such a brief span of time, devolve into th most dictatorship in German history."
Nora Bossong

In her new novel, Nora Bossong explores deep into the life of the woman who would become Magda Goebbels, offering an intimate portrait of her and the young lover who would shape her early years. Through their tangled lives and complex relationships, Bossong vividly captures the chilling transformation of a democracy into a fascist regime. When Hans, deeply in love with his schoolfriend Hellmut, meets Hellmut's stunning and enigmatic stepmother, Magda, neither of them could foresee the dramatic and disturbing role she would later play in his life. The Weimar Republic is in its prime, brimming with promise, and Hans' infatuation with Hellmut seems all-consuming—but fate soon takes a dark turn. After a tragic incident, Hans and Magda embark on a forbidden affair, each seeking something the other can provide: she craves an escape from her stifling marriage, while he hides from the truth of his sexuality. As Magda's path intertwines with Joseph Goebbels and her loyalty shifts to the Nazi Party, their connection begins to unravel. While Magda rises as a fervent Nazi icon, appearing with her children in state-sponsored newsreels, Hans finds himself increasingly at risk.

Nora Bossong, born in 1982 in Bremen, writes poetry, novels, and essays, for which she has been repeatedly honored, most recently with the Joseph-Breitbach-Preis and the Thomas-Mann-Preis. Nora Bossong lives in Berlin.
