"Michelangelo's true self remains closed unless it is understood from within its dissonances: as an inability to transform the disparate into harmony. Everything is layered with a desire for the world of the senses, of closeness, of fulfillment. For Michelangelo, this desire was both a source of strife and of inspiration.” Horst Bredekamp

Horst Bredekamp impressively demonstrates how art historiography can itself become an art form, with his Michelangelo monograph of over 800 pages, which entered into its second print run at Wagenbach Verlag after just two months. The process of talking about the possibilities of art in these disenchanted times, awakening a sense of the unpredictable, the unfathomable, and the delicate, inspired the next installment in the series "Writing in Disenchanted Times," curated and moderated by Matthias Bormuth, Professor of the History of Political Thought at the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg.

Bredekamp narrates Michelangelo's revolutionary work in art and politics based on the interpretive illumination of each work in the history of Michelangelo's development and vividly embeds these in the panorama of the time. With iconic works, such as David, the creation of Adam in the Sistine Chapel, or buildings like the dome of St. Peter's Basilica, Michelangelo's work is undoubtedly part of the formative cultural heritage.

Horst Bredekamp, born in Kiel in 1947, has worked as a professor of art history at Berlin's Humboldt University since 1993. The award-winning art historian has also undertaken guest residencies at Princeton and the Getty Center in Los Angeles, among other places.
