"Why Love Hurts, Why It Ends – and What Economized Desire Does to Our Relationships" has been an illuminating subject of study for Eva Illouz over many years. The Israeli sociologist is one of the most important contemporary thinkers and has publicly addressed the situation in Israel and Palestine, sharply criticizing the Netanyahu government following the Hamas attack on Israel. This fall, her new book, "Explosive Modernity," will be released, where she examines our tumultuous times from a perspective focusing on emotions.
Central themes include fear, disappointment, and anger, as well as shame and love—emotions that are heavily influenced by economics, politics, and culture. Illouz explores their moral and psychological significance and political impact through sociological analyses, historical vignettes, and readings of iconic works of world literature. The fragility of liberal democracy and the conflicts surrounding identity, antisemitism, racism, and misogyny cannot be understood or contained without addressing the "key emotions of explosive modernity," as Illouz argues.
Born in 1961, Illouz is Professor of Sociology at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and study director at the Centre européen de sociologie et de science politique in Paris. She lives in Tel Aviv and Paris.
