Societies are shaped not only by norms and interests, but also – and perhaps more importantly – by collective emotions and their management. Emotions are omnipresent in today’s politics. This makes it more crucial than ever to examine the complex interactions between emotions, society, and politics.

Since the early 1990s, Eva Illouz has sparked a debate on collective emotions across various disciplines – from sociology and cultural studies to political theory. In reading her books and articles, this workshop will explore both the continuities and shifts in her work.

How have her assumptions evolved over time? How has the shift in research focus, from capitalist consumerism to populism, influenced her methodology?

Led by Felix Heidenreich, this academic workshop seeks to deepen our understanding of Illouz's contributions and explore their place in contemporary debates on collective emotions.
