In the face of major social challenges, Germany needs a political approach that not only addresses current problems but also looks to the future. Only by imagining potential scenarios can we prepare for uncertainties and shape democracy in a proactive way. Andrea Römmele highlights the key fault lines that have affected every aspect of our society: digitalization, climate change, demographic shifts, migration, a globally interconnected economy, and urbanization. For each of these developments, she outlines scenarios that show how democracy could thrive in response to these profound changes. A shift in mindset is therefore essential: moving from a focus on individual gain to prioritizing the collective good, and from a fear of the future to embracing courage for what lies ahead.

Andrea Römmele is a Professor of Political Communication and Vice President at the Hertie School in Berlin. She was a Fellow at the Thomas Mann House, Los Angeles. Her main areas of focus are democracy, elections, and political parties. In her ARD report "Understanding Democracy," she explains politics and democracy to a broad public.
